Introduction
The product i have chosen to investigate is the deck of a skateboard. The skateboard deck is the wooden plank that the person stands on on a skateboard. All parts of a board attach to the deck and after it has been used, can offer some creative and fun ways to recycle.
Timeline: the life cycle of a skateboard.
Raise and Extract
Skateboard decks are mainly made from wood which is made from trees. The wood is then shipped to the factories for processing.
Process
The raw wood is then pressure treated, and made into thin layers of wood. A skateboard deck is made of 7 different layers of wood pressed and glued together.
Manufacture
The new piece of wood is then put in a mold and pressed to fit it. The mold makes the nose, tail, and concave of each board. The blank deck is finished, and then designs can be put on the board using screen printing or hand painting.
Use
The use of a skateboard is used by physically riding it. Skateboards can be used for transportation, in action sport competitions, or just for pure entertainment. Skateboard decks come in many different shapes and sizes with each performing different with every rider.
Dispose
There isn't really a specific way to dispose of skateboards. And since they are made of wood, they have no severe effect on the environment besides the fact that the wood supply might be contributing to deforestation. When I am done with a skateboard deck for good, I will either throw it away or use it for scrap-wood for other projects.
Recycle or Reuse
There are some ways you can reuse and recycle a skateboard deck. You can't really reuse an old skateboard deck because after it's done it's use, it is typically broken in half from being used and worn. But you can use the broken pieces for scrap-wood and even make some art pieces.
Conclusion
A) the trip a product takes through the making, use and disposal of itself
B) so that when it reaches the end of it's life cycle, it doesn't hurt the environment or have negative impacts on anything else
C) i honestly wouldn't change anything. there isn't any real negative effects to the environment or society because of this product
D) Yeah, just like any sport or activity, it will come in waves of popularity like it has done in the past but never completely die out
E) a trade off is a compromise or agreement on some standards
F) no, if there was it would be on simple things like the design of the board (i.e; trade off size for weight or width for turning ability)
G) so trash and waste isn't released into the environment
H) i don't really think they have a role in recycling of the product
I) society controls it, if a bunch of people recycle, then other people recycle. If a bunch of people don't recycle then vice-versa
J) recycle my trash and other waste, pick up litter, purchase environmentally friendly products
